SEO Migration to Shopify
Last updated August 2026
Managing the SEO implications of platform migration including URL structure changes, redirects, metadata, structured data, sitemaps, and search engine notification.
Complexity8/10
Affected platforms11
ApproachSee below
What transfers
- Product meta titles and descriptions (manual mapping)
- Category/collection meta titles and descriptions
- Image alt text
- URL redirects (301 mappings)
What does NOT transfer: Shopify migration tools cannot transfer all data types. The following are commonly lost during migration.
- Historical ranking positions are not preserved
- Backlinks pointing to old URLs need 301 redirects to pass value
- Structured data markup differs between platforms
- Blog post URLs and their SEO value
- Internal linking structure
- Google Search Console history
Risks and common problems
- Organic search performance can be affected by any platform migration. Impact varies with redirect quality, URL changes, and crawl frequency
- Missing 301 redirects cause 404 errors and lost backlink equity
- Duplicate content if old and new sites coexist
- Canonical tags referencing old URLs
- Structured data validation errors on new platform
- Sitemap submission with broken URLs
- Google indexing delay (2-4 weeks for full recrawl)
Recommended approach
Create a complete 301 redirect map before migration. Preserve meta titles and descriptions where possible. Use Google Search Console's Change of Address tool for domain changes. Submit new sitemaps immediately after launch. Monitor 404 errors aggressively for the first 3 months. Keep old platform accessible for redirect verification for at least 6 months.
Technical notes
- 301 redirects must be one-to-one, not many-to-one, for SEO value
- Shopify redirects are created via URL Redirects API or in admin at /admin/redirects
- Maximum 100,000 redirects per Shopify store
- Google recommends keeping redirects for at least 1 year
- Structured data (Product, BreadcrumbList, Organization) must be re-implemented
- Shopify automatically generates sitemap.xml for products, collections, pages, blogs
- Custom sitemap structure can be achieved with robots.txt additions
- Consider maintaining old domain with redirects rather than letting it expire
